Is this summer making you dysfunctional?

This hot summer is making you unproductive; here are 4 steps to make yourself feel good today.

Let’s admit it; this summer has brought in by far the most burning sun and scorching heat, making it impossible to feel cool. The added events of fasting in Navratri and Ramadan are bringing everyone closer to fatigue and frustration.

Our mornings are chilled till 7 AM or so, after which it feels like we are sitting atop a hot pan and slowly sizzling away. Whether you are working remotely or in the office, you have had to face the wrath of climate change to some degree.

Working or doing anything in the summer seems like a monumental task for some people. It’s draining to do house chores, make food, go out or focus on work. It’s shocking how the little things can impact our day, but it is possible.

If you are having a series of not-so-good days where the mornings and afternoons are like the Sahara desert and evenings full of humidity, it is normal not to have it all together. You are not being lazy or slacking on purpose. You are simply dealing with it in the most agile manner you can.

So, stop beating yourself up for not having functional days. It was bound to happen. It is but an outcome of the current environment. Instead, focus on what you can do.

Here are 4 steps to help yourself during this challenging time.

  1. Accept it all

Yes, this is a hard time. Not being able to tolerate the sun may seem trivial, but ask yourself this. Is it affecting you significantly? If it is, then it’s not trivial anymore. It’s serious. We tend to get more thirsty, hungry, and irritated in this weather. We might not want to engage in conversations with our close ones because of tiredness. We won’t have as much energy to do the things we love.

Don’t sideline it thinking that you possibly couldn’t fight the weather. It may not be possible to fight it, but it is possible to protect yourself. This will start only when you accept that you cannot thrive right now and need to have some modulations to make your life better.

2. List it down

What irks you the most during summers? What are your peeves? Observe how you feel from the start of the day to the very next dawn of the morning. Notice how you feel even while sleeping. E.g., I have been having disrupted sleep days because of the heat in my room. It makes me cranky in the morning and drowsy in the afternoon. What is affecting your life then? Write it down and make a mental note.

3. Find solutions

Okay, now that you have made a list, think of what you can control. Be realistic about it. Just like you probably can’t buy an AC or cooler at a whim because it’s super hot at night, brooding on this thought won’t help you. Find solutions that fit your picture.

4. Be savvy

So what if you can’t have an AC? Maybe you could try taking a shower before you sleep and use a cooling powder instead. Perhaps you could keep a cold water bottle beside you at night. There will be alternatives to some things; try to think of them.

I aimed to tell you that you can change things around you. Maybe it won’t be the best change ever, but better is still better than best!
